Kari Soinio´s work concentrates on sense and representation of corporeality, sexuality and identity in male body. Soinio has experimented extensively with problematics of perception and representation in his auto-portraiture-based work on male body.
He wants to critically look both into masculinity and femininity in masculinity, to show ambiguous bodies with traits of both. He enjoys addressing masculine complacency and self-importance in his work through his own body.
His work derives from and comments both popular culture and history of art and photography.
Kari Soinio lives and works in New York.
He has recently shown at Heino Gallery (2012) and Korjaamo Gallery (2011) in Helsinki and in several museums in Finland, the Museum of Contemporary Art Kiasma and Finnish Museum of Photography in Helsinki among them. A monograph "From Landscape to Place" was published in 2009 in conjunction with shows at Heino Gallery and Kerava Art Museum. His show at the Intitut Finlandais in Paris, part of Mois de la Photo in 2010 received significant attention from local art press.
